Be Wise with Waste
Location: Main Retail Plaza
Sustainability and environmental awareness are integral principles at Walker. We agree with the high value our occupants and community place on positive environmental performance. With dedicated Sustainability and Service teams, we are always striving towards our first-class environmental targets.
Be Wise with Waste supports an effort at Collins Square to optimise our recycling rates by ensuring we put waste in the right place.
Increasing our recycling rates is our collective objective, but did you know that contamination occurs when items are incorrectly placed in the recycling bins? Sadly, bins with too many contaminants need to be diverted to landfill - including all the good recyclable materials - so it’s important that we strive to minimise it. Our most recent waste audits showed that, on average, over 22% of the contents of a Mixed Recycling bin are contamination. There was also a significant missed opportunity to increase our recycling, as close to 20% of content found in our General Waste bins should have been recycled.
If you are unsure where to put your waste, please feel free to refer to our guide.
In pursuit of encouraging a positive mind-set to optimise recycling, Collins Square has introduced Smart Bins on the Main Retail Plaza Floor. Equipped with scanners, the Smart Bins will only allow eligible recyclable drink containers to be deposited upon a simple scan of a barcode. Every container deposited will contribute to a donation that will be made to support The Yarra Riverkeeper Association. A community-based organisation that has a vision for a Yarra Birrarung that is healthy, protected, and loved through advocacy, collaboration, education, and on-the-ground actions such as removing litter. Every $10 raised goes towards establishing a tree or a 100m clean up of the river bank.

The Smart Bins are located in front of Pure Pie, and The Italian Man.

Together, our positive actions, simple acts and small adjustments contribute to significant positive impact.
